Demetrios Papakostas painter's portfolio

July 8, 2008

Another project that kept me busy the last few weeks was Demetrios painter's portfolio. Demetrios found me through Facebook and had 52 paintings and drawings to photograph. The sizes range from 72x60in to 8x10in, different media was used: oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels and ink. I could never convince myself to tackle a canvas that large. Then again, I would need a ladder to reach the top of it. Demetrios, on the other hand, could move the largest of his pieces with great ease. The initial, cowering effects of his stature were quickly soothed by his laid back, personable, kind and jovial character. I found these characteristics resonating throughout his work. The largest of this pieces have a calm, gradual palette. His newest series of works plays on contrasting colors and shapes, illustrating his joyful, hearty side. Many of his smaller pieces are a testament to his personable quality by virtue of technique, medium, and color used in such an intrinsic way that it allows the pieces to convey genuine emotion. Demetrios wanted to make a functional portfolio with titles, sizes etc. I added a neutral background to the photos with files sized to be printed on 8.5x11in photo paper with 1.5in minimal margin around each photo. This slide show has a few samples of what the final portfolio pages looked like, as well as original images of the paintings.
